<\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nThis\ncertainly seems to be in line with the thinking of Urban Brew Studios, who \u2013\nalong with the move to their state-of-the-art new facilities \u2013 recently\ncontracted Protea Electronics during the purchase of their own OB van.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Urban\nBrew Studios\u2019 CEO, Verona Duwarkah explains that \u201calthough we\u2019ve had OB vans\npreviously, they became outdated in terms of HD capability. That meant, with\nthe changeover from SD to HD, we were hiring in quite a bit.\u201d Theunis du Toit\nadds to this point, saying, \u201cIt made sense from a business point of view.\nAlthough outside broadcasting was an offering of ours previously, now we have\nan OB van that we own: we can use it on our own productions and also make it\navailable to others as an additional revenue stream.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And\nas far as content strategy is concerned, Urban Brew aim to use their new van to\nexpand and enrich their current OB portfolio. \u201cHaving an OB van of your own\ngives you that flexibility in the business,\u201d says Duwarkah. \u201cRather than just\nkeeping Live Amp <\/em>in a studio all the time, you can actually go and do\nroad trips \u2013 you can get to your audiences in the different provinces. The same\ngoes with our youth programming: we would like to be able to take our offerings\nto children around the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n In\nterms of how Protea went about kitting out Urban Brew\u2019s new OB van, Kagiso Mabe\nexplains that the company always follows similar principles. \u201cBroadcasting is a\nsystem, and whenever you are coordinating a number of parts, communication with\nthe customer is the most vital aspect. You need to get a sense of their\nambitions \u2013 what they want to use the equipment for, both now and in the future\n\u2013 so you don\u2019t end up under-supplying them or taking away any functionality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mabe\nsays that, \u201cthe coach build was done locally, and we collaborated with another\ncompany to rig up the cabling inside the truck. So the OB van project was a\nlocal production, from the modification of the vehicle to the installation of\nthe equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jacques\nWelthagen of Protea describes the studio rig contained in the Urban Brew van\nas, an eye-wateringly sophisticated set-up for such a compact space. \u201cThe Urban\nBrew OB van is HD-ready and is pre-wired for 10 cameras and eight recording\nchannels to the Stryme Video Server and another four channels for playback. For\nvisual mixing, there is the Grass Valley Korona unit, and \u2013 at the heart of the\noperation \u2013 is a Grass Valley router with an Apantac Compact Multiviewer. The\nCG (Character Generator) unit is a Ross Xpression.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Interestingly,\nUrban Brew\u2019s new OB van has already been tested in terms of its key\nrequirements of functionality and ease of use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As\nMabe explains; because of tight deadlines and ongoing building construction,\nwhen Urban Brew initially relocated to their new studios \u201cthe plan was first to\nmake sure that one studio was fully operational before the 1 April deadline. So\nwe got the floor going and rigged up lights in there, and in the end the studio\noperations were actually run from the OB van, while our team moved into the\nMaster Control Room and started installing the rest of the studio kit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not\nonly did the OB van deliver in this high-stakes situation, but Mabe also shares\nthat \u201cin the studio\u2019s Master Control Room, we ended up installing a Grass\nValley Korona switcher. This was already in the OB van, and once the Urban Brew\nengineers were used to this piece of equipment, when they were ready to move\ninto studios we brought the familiarity and the comfortable use of this kit\ninto the main facility\u2019s control rooms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n In\nKerr\u2019s view, this case study shows that \u201cas a facility, Urban Brew are thinking\noutside of the box, and they are adding value to their customer base by having\nthis ability to do both in-house production, as well as to take any production\nout on the road with the OB van.
